Most people jump straight into heavy hip thrusts, chasing load and range, before they’ve actually learned how to use their glutes.

And that’s exactly where progress stalls.

The Real Issue: You’re Skipping the Foundation

The glutes are responsible for hip extension, the act of driving your hips forward.

But for that to happen properly, you need control of your pelvis.

If you don’t have that control, you won’t extend through the hips.

You’ll extend through your lower back instead.

This is what most hip thrusts end up looking like:

So even though the weight is moving…

The glutes aren’t actually doing the work.

Why This Kills Glute Development

When you move into large ranges of motion (like hip thrusts) without control:

  • The glutes stay lengthened

  • The lower back takes over

  • The hamstrings assist more than they should

So instead of building the glutes…

You reinforce a pattern that avoids them.

That’s why people:

  • “Don’t feel their glutes”

  • Plateau quickly

  • Get lower back discomfort

  • Aren’t seeing Glute development

Why I Start With the Glute Bridge

Before adding range or load, I want one thing:

Can you actually use your glutes?

The glute bridge removes the variables.

Shorter range. More control. Easier to learn.

It allows you to:

  • Find a posterior pelvic tilt

  • Keep the ribs down

  • Fully shorten the glutes at the top

This is where real glute development starts.

Not with load.

With control.
